If you know me, you know that Pinterest is totally my jam. Sometime in the last two years, Pinterest decided to implement hashtag usage on the platform again and I never got around to writing a post about it because I wanted to wait and see if it was something that would actually stick so I thought now was as good of a time as any.

While keywords are still very important to include on Pinterest, hashtags are a new thing taking the Pinterest world by storm.

Don’t feel the need to go and add hashtags to all of your old posts though because it won’t really do you any good. Simply, add these hashtags to your pins from here on out for a chance to get your pins seen by more people.

Utilize keywords in the search feed

You can use the keywords in the search feed to form your hashtag sets for Pinterest. I recommend using simple hashtags like #socialmediatips or #instagramstrategy over more complex hashtags like you would on Instagram.

Use a mix of broad and specific hashtags

For example, #socialmediatips would be the broad hashtag while #instagramtips would be a more specific one to use. It’s helpful to try and rank for both the broader and more specific terms to give you the most bang for your buck.

Don’t Use Too Many Hashtags

Pinterest specifies for users to not use more than 20 hashtags but I say no more than 3-5 hashtags per pin otherwise it can start to become a little overwhelming.

See what your competitors are doing

I always like to take a look and see what my competitors are doing when it comes to Pinterest and pretty much everything else. While we shouldn’t completely obsess over our competitors, it is important to analyze their strategies so we can improve our own.

Are you currently using hashtags on Pinterest? If not, do you plan on adding them to your Pinterest strategy soon? Let me know in the comments.
